3rd Annual Pijinuiskaq Paddle Fest return to Bridgewater Sept 19 & 20
Paddlers of all ages and skill levels will gather in the Bridgewater area September 19 and 20 for the 3rd annual Pijinuiskaq Paddle Fest, a weekend celebration of recreation, culture, and community on Pijinuiskaq, the Mi’kmaq name for the LaHave River. The festival features a variety of paddling experiences, including the popular Parade of Paddlers, guided excursions, and opportunities for participants to get out on the water and experience one of Nova Scotia’s most historic waterways.
Created to encourage people to connect with and explore Pijinuiskaq, the festival has grown steadily since its inception, attracting both residents and visitors while expanding its schedule of events and activities each year.

“Pijinuiskaq Paddle Fest provides an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to experience this remarkable riverway while celebrating the natural beauty, history, and culture that make this region unique.”
A festival highlight, the Pijinuiskaq Parade of Paddlers, returns on Sunday with more than 100 kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards expected to launch from Shipyards Landing in Bridgewater. Participants will paddle through downtown Bridgewater before continuing on an optional extended route to Miller Point Peace Park in Dayspring, where a festival barbeque will be held before paddlers return to Shipyards Landing.
On Saturday afternoon, visitors can experience Big Canoe paddling, a unique group paddling activity that accommodates up to 10 participants at a time. Departing from Pijinuiskaq Park in downtown Bridgewater, the 2pm – 4pm activity complements the Town’s Harvest Moon Music Festival and offers an accessible way for newcomers to try paddling on the river.
Saturday also features a unique opportunity with festival partner Cape LaHave Adventures as they offer a full-day guided paddle through the spectacular Cape LaHave Islands. Located near the mouth of the LaHave River in Dublin Shore, participants will have the opportunity to experience the Islands to see birds, seals and more and visit some of the region’s picturesque white-sand beaches – only accessible by water.
Originally launched as part of Bridgewater’s 125th anniversary celebrations in 2024, Pijinuiskaq Paddle Fest has evolved into an annual event that strengthens partnerships, celebrates and acknowledges the regions Mi’kmaq culture and heritage, highlighting the important relationship between local communities and the river that has helped shape the area’s history and identity.
Registration is required for both the Parade of Paddlers and the Cape LaHave Islands guided tour. Pijinuiskaq Paddle Fest is proudly presented by Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia, Cape LaHave Adventures, the Town of Bridgewater, and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.
